Tsutaya Kyoto: Making public spaces more welcoming

Inserting bookstores and franchise coffee places into architectural marvels not only encourage more visitors but also makes the area more welcoming. At ROHM Theatre, tourists and residents on weekends sit side by side on tiny wooden tables, browsing books and drinking coffee till dusk falls. When the programming is right, people will use it, and Japan is not new to creating public spaces that are inhabitable and not just picturesque icons.
